Here’s just a few things to remember when preparing your trees for winter weather. 

1. Insulation
It is important to protect the root systems of young plants and trees. Add a layer of mulch on top of the soil around the roots. Mulch is an insulator that protects the roots when the temperatures fall to freezing. Add 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the base of the tree in late fall or early winter.

2. Moisture
Make sure you water the soil around the tree trunk before applying the mulch.

3. Trimming & Pruning
Avoid trimming trees and shrubs in the fall as this promotes growth on the tree which won’t survive the upcoming dropping temps. However, if you have dead limbs near your roof or eaves of a house, you should remove these limbs before fall. 4. Cover Outdoor Plants, Shrubs and Small Trees
When the weather is calling for below zero temperatures, it is recommended that you cover as many of your plants, shrubs and small trees as possible. Burlap, canvas or sheets will do just fine. This helps protect the plant from harsh wind, ice and moisture loss.
